More jobs and higher wages in Israel, and chronic unemployment in the West Bank/Palestine, lead more than 70,000 Palestinians to enter Israel daily for work. Heavy traffic, transfers, and inspections at the security barrier turn the relatively short-distance commute into a multi-hour trek. These images, mostly taken for Machsom Watch, documented conditions at the Qalandiya and Bethlehem checkpoint crossings during 2017-2018, prior to their significant upgrade in 2019 to improve speed and safety.
